Volume replacement

What is Volume replacement?

Volume replacement is a cosmetic gel composed of hyaluronic acid (a naturally occurring complex sugar) and collagens which are naturally produced in the body that reduces as we age. The fillers are injected to plump up areas under the skin which have become less supported and give you a fresh, more youthful appearance.

What should I expect for my Volume Replacement procedure?

Your first experience with volume replacement can be a little scary but we can assure you that there’s nothing to fear.

To help make things a little less overwhelming, here is a rundown on what you can expect for your first appointment:

Before the appointment:

  1. Call or email to book your appointment with Port Cosmetic Clinic.
  2. For 1 week prior to your appointment, avoid Aspirin and Vitamin E.
  3. For 24 hours prior to your appointment, avoid exercise and alcohol as this can increase the risk of bruising.

During the appointment:

  1. Arrive at the studio and be greeted by Joyce’s smiling face.
  2. The first 20-30 minutes involves talking with Joyce about what you are hoping to achieve and to ensure that you know what is involved in your procedure.
  3. You will have a video call with a doctor who will take a brief medical history and clear you to go ahead with the procedure.
  4. Once you are comfortable to continue with your volume replacement, you will sign a consent form.
  5. Joyce will then administer the fillers through a tiny needle and syringe into the area you want to treat. This is quite painless and only takes a few minutes and then you are free to leave. The whole appointment generally takes around 1 hour depending on how many areas you want done.

After the appointment:

  1. It’s a good idea to remain upright for 4 hours after the treatment to ensure the product settles into place nicely.
  2. DO NOT exercise at all for 24 hours after your procedure
  3. Avoid the following after receiving your fillers:
  • Active skincare products such as Retinol for 5 days
  • Alcohol and painkillers such as ibuprofen
  • Skin treatments like microdermabrasion, skin needling or dermal rolling for 2 weeks
  • Excessive heat or cold such as spas, saunas, steam rooms, ice baths, skiing etc
  • Massaging or applying pressure to treated areas
  • International travel for 2 weeks

Frequently asked questions about Volume Replacement

  • Does volume replacement hurt?

Most people experience little more than a pinch and some slight pressure but as pain thresholds differ from person to person, you may feel slightly more or less pain.  Any pain you experience will be over very quickly.

  • How old do I have to be to get volume replacement?

You must be at least 18 years of age to undergo any cosmetic procedure.

  • Can I get volume replacement while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Due to the lack of evidence around how volume replacement treatments may or may not affect your baby, for your safety, cosmetic enhancements cannot be performed while you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Does volume replacement cause the skin to sag

No.  Volume replacement may stretch your skin slightly but your skin will return to its natural state when your body eventually metabolises the filler gel.

  • How long does volume replacement last?

The time that fillers last depends on how quickly your body metabolises the filler gel.  Some factors that may contribute to how long it lasts include:

    • Level of activity
    • Location of the filler
    • Smoking
    • UV Exposure
    • Stress
    • Skin care health

Fillers can last anywhere from 3 months to 2 years!

  • Is volume replacement safe?

As the gel used for volume replacement is made up with ingredients that naturally occur in the body, volume replacement is perfectly safe.

When administered by a registered cosmetic nurse, the procedure is very safe, and the risk of side effects is very low.

  • What are the risks associated with volume replacement?

As with any medical procedure, there are some potential risk factors including bruising and bleeding which is highly unusual but is possible so please let Joyce know if you are prone to either of these.

  • What if something happens after my volume replacement appointment?

Joyce is always available by phone in the unlikely case that you experience any side effects after your treatment. If you have questions that arise, you can always send Joyce a quick text or give her a call to alleviate any concerns.
